Irrigation vs drainage: What’s the difference?
Irrigation involves using collected water – for example, from a rain barrel, cistern or well – and directing it purposefully, such as to a garden sprayer or lawn sprinkler. This is typically done with a garden pump, which is positioned outside the water and generates sufficient pressure.
Drainage, on the other hand, is about removing as much water as possible in a short amount of time – for example, from a flooded cellar, pond or pool. Submersible pumps are used for this purpose. They are placed directly in the water and pump it out reliably – often with particularly high flow rates.
Irrigating without a socket: Watering with cordless garden pumps
The rain has been generous, and now your cistern or water butt is full – but the vegetable patch is all the way at the back of the garden. The hose doesn’t reach, the watering can is heavy, and the nearest power socket is too far away.
